A joint project between Westminster Council, Crosstail and the Metropolitan Police has seen success in tackling the prevelence of rough sleepers in Hanover Square Gardens.
Redesign work, which has now been completed, has been undertaken in the Gardens to reduce the opportunities for rough sleepers to store bedding materials and sleep in the gardens overnight.
The works were completed after advice from a Crime Prevention Design Advisor at Westminster, and have seen Crossrail increase the hoarding on the west side of the park where there was an encampment of bedding materials, the hoarding is now flush with the fencing to reduce opportunities for rough sleeping and storage of materials.
Crossrail have also provided flood lights on the north side of the gardens at night in order to make it less attractive for rough sleepers.
These welcome improvements should help combat the problem of rough sleeping in the Gardens.

Industry names gather for our milestone celebration
Friends and supporters gathered on Wednesday 15 October to celebrate progress on site and to acknowledge all those who have so far supported our £6 million fundraising campaign, enabling it to reach its three-quarter mark. We had great pleasure in welcoming guests from the film, television and arts industries including Sandi Toksvig, broadcaster and producer, Greg Dyke, chair of the BFI and Nick Kent, former director of the Tricycle Theatre and Cinema Advisory Board member. As we enter the final stages of our campaign to raise the remaining £1.3 million there is still time to get invoved, through naming a Cinema seat or by becoming one of our individual or corporate founders.
British film - a lecture with alumnus John Woodward
Join us on Tuesday 4 November when John Woodward, Managing Director at Arts Alliance (formerly Chief Executive Officer of the UK Film Council and Director of the BFI), will deliver his lecture on 'The Rise (and Fall and Rise Again) of the British Film Industry’. John graduated in Media Studies from the University (PCL) in 1983 and will be coming back to our Regent Street headquarters to share with us his insights and inside knowledge of both the highs and lows of the British film industry.

Thanks to our supporters and friends nearly half the seats in the restored Cinema have now been named. By choosing to name a seat you will be invited to join us in spring 2015 for a special reception and screening in the newly restored Cinema and to view your seat and personalised name plaque. You will also receive recognition on our website and a one year membership to the Cinema. You can name a seat for £750 or an exclusive Director’s seat for £1,500.
Behind the scenes at the Cinema site
Take our picture story tour of the Cinema under construction and see how the new design scheme, created by Tim Ronalds Architects, is bringing to life the historic fabric of the Cinema and transforming it into a state-of-the-art auditorium. The current construction site office will be transformed into a dedicated learning room at the rear of the auditorium, while a café, bar and foyer space opening onto Regent Street will provide a comfortable social area for all audiences and offer a unique and engaging visitor experience.
Retracing the Cinema's history
Further research into the history of this unique space is being undertaken for a special upcoming book, to be published next spring in conjunction with the Cinema’s launch. To reflect the rich history of the Cinema itself, several specialist authors will contribute chapters on architecture, legal history and our rich heritage of innovation and film education. If you visited the Cinema and would like to share your memories as part of our oral history programme, we would love to hear from you.
This weekend will see a festival taking place in Fitzrovia to celebrate the centenary of Dylan Thomas's life and work.

This week saw the launch of the Rupert Street Food Union market on Fridays and Saturdays.
Street Food Union was created in 2013 by three traders keen to champion the best up and coming talent on the street food scene and offer fresh, exciting and above all delicious products.
The founders of Street Food Union wanted to create a food market with a cool, community vibe and so they hand-picked the very best traders and scouted for the very best chefs and encouraged them to become street food traders. Through their support and assistance many first-time traders have brought their products into the Street Food Union and built a lively, diverse food market.
Westminster council provided the site on Rupert Street, with the aim of encouraging more people to come from Shaftesbury Avenue, through Soho and up to Oxford Street.
Rupert Street is in a corner of Soho best known for bars and clubs, and has seen a 40-fold increase in the number of people visiting Rupert Street on days the market is trading*, accompanied by a significant reduction in crime.
The new market is a great success story and I would encourage you to pay it a visit.

Crossrail is working on a very tight site at the top of Dean Street and have proposed the creation of additional facilities to be placed on a high level gantry at the top end of Dean Street. This proposal caused great concern to the long suffering nearby residents and businesses who would effectively lost daylight, visibility, access and the ability to undertake their business had the proposal proceeded.
Through the Community Liaison Panel, which I Chair, these expressions of concern were made clear to Crossrail who have now come up with an alternative proposal to include increased on site provision (within their existing perimeter hoarding) and an alternative arrangement meaning that the proposal will not now proceed.
We all understand that Crossrail have a difficult and complex job in delivering the railway by the due date of 2018 and on budget. However, this is a great example of where that imperative needs to be tempered by the needs and requirements of local residents and businesses and this alternative solution has now been found allowing the railway to proceed and residents and businesses to continue to enjoy their premises.
